Light You Can’t See
Your eyes see a rainbow. The universe has a much bigger light show.
Watch on YouTube
3:06A song. A few new discoveries.
Travel from radio waves and microwaves through infrared and visible light to ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays. Discover familiar uses, from Wi-Fi and TV remotes to medical images.
All these waves travel at the same speed in a vacuum. The X-ray lyric is a simplification: bone absorbs more X-rays than soft tissue. Thermal cameras detect infrared; other night-vision systems amplify visible light.
Made for curious kids around ages 6–12 and the grown-ups watching with them. Music and animation created with AI tools under Mike Sego’s direction. YouTube’s video description includes the release notes and credits.

Smarty Party!
Right now, there's light all around you... that you can't see.
Radio waves are the longest, some as long as a football field,
Carrying songs to the radio—that's the music they yield!
Microwaves are shorter; they wiggle water till it's hot,
And your phone and Wi-Fi use them too, believe it or not!
Infrared is heat you feel, glowing warm without a sight;
Your TV remote flashes it—a secret beam of light!
Some snakes can sense it, seeing warmth out in the dark;
Night-vision cameras use it too—they find you like a spark!
Light you can't see! All around you and me!
Radio, microwave, infrared glow—
Then a rainbow, ultraviolet, X-ray, gamma—whoa!
It's all the same light, just a different wave!
Then comes the part that your eyes can find:
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet in line!
It's a tiny little slice of the whole big show,
Just a sliver of the light—but it's the one we know!
Light you can't see! All around you and me!
Radio, microwave, infrared glow—
Then a rainbow, ultraviolet, X-ray, gamma—whoa!
It's all the same light, just a different wave!
Ultraviolet's just past violet—it's the light that makes you burn;
Bees see it on flowers: secret landing strips—now you learn!
X-rays zip right through your skin, but stop when they hit bone—
That's how the doctor spots a break and checks on every bone!
Gamma rays are the tiniest waves, with the most energy of all,
Blasting out from exploding stars—way too far to call!
Long waves, short waves, big and small,
They all go the speed of light—the fastest of all.
Your eyes see just a sliver, like a crack in a door,
But the universe is glowing with so much more!
Light you can't see! All around you and me!
Radio, microwave, infrared glow—
Then a rainbow, ultraviolet, X-ray, gamma—whoa!
It's all the same light, just a different wave!
Wait. My TV remote shines invisible light?
Can I use it as a flashlight?
...Only if you're a snake.
